The Long Barn at Town End Farm

In 2012 we had a mid-life crisis (although one of Ian’s colleagues told us we had already passed that marker). We have always been customer focused in our careers and had dreamed about taking control of our lives and running our own business. So, we took the plunge and decided to sell our house and set up a self-catering business for large groups of friends and family to meet up in style and comfort. We have put our hearts and souls into the restoration of this characterful luxurious self catering barn and tried to think of every detail you need to make your stay truly memorable. There is space to spread out in & relax, space to come together in. 7 generous en suite double bedrooms mean no one has the short straw. The Long Barn is the perfect place to escape to with family and friends for a special celebration in the beautiful North York Moors National Park.

Today is D-Day.

For most people, it marks the anniversary of the day Allied forces returned to French soil in 1944.

For us, it marks something rather more personal.

It was the day we finally moved into Town End Farm.

We packed up almost 20 happy years in Harrogate and took a leap into the unknown. Ian had left corporate life and we were searching for a property that could become both our home and our business.

We looked everywhere. From the southern Lakes to the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors.

What we thought we wanted was clear. What we definitely didn't want was a Grade II listed property in a conservation area.

So naturally, we ended up buying one.

We nearly dismissed Town End Farm without viewing it. But after weeks of searching, we decided it was worth a look.

As we drove over the cattle grid and across the common towards Appleton-le-Moors, something felt different.

The Long Barn was only partly converted. The West Barn was derelict. One gable end of the farmhouse was pulling away from the building.

There was a lot to do.

But as we walked around, we both knew.

We'd found the one.

The photos from that first viewing tell a story. Ian carefully documenting everything. Jackie disappearing ahead, getting more excited with every step.

Thirteen years ago today, we moved in.

That first evening we wandered around with a glass of wine, alternating between "What have we done?" and imagining what it might become.

Since then we've learnt a huge amount.

We've adapted and improved the barns as we've got to know our guests. We've learnt how to work together as a couple for the first time. Jackie has discovered that not every problem needs a list. Although she still loves one. Ian has learnt that maintaining an old property is a bit like painting the Forth Bridge. The job is never quite finished.

Most importantly, we've met some wonderful people along the way.

Thank you to every guest who has stayed with us over the years. And thank you to our friends, family and local community who have supported us throughout the journey.

We couldn't have done it without you.
