Walking Friendly
May is National Walking Month. This annual campaign highlights the fantastic benefits of walking and wheeling for both our physical and mental well-being.
Here at The Long Barn, we’re proud to be accredited as “Walking Friendly” by the North York Moors National Park. This means we go the extra mile to help you make the most of your walking adventures here.
- Walks from Our Doorstep & Beyond: We provide our personal recommendations for five scenic walks starting right from The Long Barn, as well as suggestions for longer explorations further afield.
- Walking-Friendly Pubs & Tea Rooms: We’ve also compiled a list of welcoming pubs and charming tea rooms perfect for walkers. It’s a tough job, but someone has to enjoy it!
- Dedicated Boot Room: The Long Barn features a toasty boot room with ample space to store and dry all your walking gear. You’ll also find boot cleaning equipment and an outdoor first aid kit for your convenience.
- Ordnance Survey Maps: We offer ordnance survey maps of the area, including a special Long Barn edition centred on Appleton-le-Moors.

Walking in the North York Moors
Since moving to the North York Moors, we’ve discovered a real love for walking. In fact, a daily walk makes a noticeable positive difference to our mental and physical state. There’s something truly invigorating about being outdoors, no matter the weather. Plus, walking in the stunning North York Moors National Park is an incredibly special experience. The diverse landscapes, from peaceful woodlands to expansive moorlands and the beautiful coast, truly offer something for everyone.
And there are so many walks to chose from. Check out this North York Moors page. Just pick a route, download a guide, and enjoy your day. Along with these walks, why not consider booking on one of their guided walks? Choose from a programme of walks which run from March until November. And remember to share with care, wherever you walk.
The North York Moors National Park is also dedicated to making the area accessible to all. Do explore their excellent “Access for All” page for ideas on accessible attractions and activities. We particularly appreciate the “Miles without Stiles” walks, categorized for ‘all’, ‘many’, or ‘some’ based on gradient and surface. These thoughtfully planned routes aim to make walking a truly inclusive activity.
So, throughout May, we’ll be sharing our favourite local walks on our social media.
Including a short walk from the Long Barn: a gentle 2-mile loop perfect for a refreshing stroll after a Sunday lunch at the Moors Inn, our local pub.
Showing you just how walking friendly, the North York Moors are.
