We believe in supporting local business and try to make it as easy as possible for guests to βshop localβ wherever possible.
We appreciate that many guests will choose to organise one big supermarket shop when staying at the Long Barn. However, there are some great local producers that we hope youβll consider using.
Shopping local means that the money you spend stays within our community, supporting local jobs, businesses, and entrepreneurs. It helps create a thriving local economy. Many of our local businesses offer unique and one of a kind products and services. From handmade crafts to locally produced foods, shopping locally in North York Moors allows you to discover distinctive items that showcase the region’s character and culture.
From an environmental perspective, you minimize the distance that products need to travel, which helps decrease greenhouse gas emissions. By consciously choosing to support local businesses, you can make a positive impact on the community and enjoy the numerous benefits of shopping local in North York Moors.
Itβs also fun as youβll meet the locals running the business. And itβs a great reminder of where our produce comes from.
We regularly promote local businesses; youβll find details of our recommendations in our welcome guide which we continually update.
- Pearsonβs Soft Fruit Farm From June onwards, this farm starts to sell the most delicious soft fruits. Itβs strawberries are the best weβve ever tasted. All the jam Jackie makes uses their fruit; she picks it straight into her jam pan. You can pick your own or buy it picked for you in punnets. They also have a lovely cafΓ© that serves their delicious cakes, along with a shop that sells fruit, cakes and jams.
- Gillamoor Organics sells their organic whole milk from the farm gate along with organic eggs. Buy a glass bottle and refill it as often as you want. The milk is delicious, and the view on the short drive north of Appleton over the moors is quite beautiful.
- Kirkbymoorside Market runs every Wednesday morning, and is a great place to stock up on local produce. Look out for the local wet fish seller and the cheese stall.
- While you are in Kirkbymoorside, check out Moorside Stores for a terrific range of local produce including their βno packagingβ section. They also sell a great range of Yorkshire made curry spices/sauces, stock Roost Coffee and also our favourite Ryeburn of Helmsley Ice Cream.
- Beadlam Grange Farm Shop and Cedar Barn Farm Shop are two of the best in the local area. Both have a great butchers section, an extensive deli and a cafΓ©. Guests with little ones also love the miniature railway at Cedar Barn. Grown ups will enjoy the wonderful Robert and Ruby Gift shop. You’ll spot some of the Long Barn furnishings from here.
This is just a taster of whatβs on offer locally.
