Inspired by the Travel sections in newspaper Sunday Supplements, here is our suggestion for a weekend at the Long Barn.

We appreciate that organising a big group isn’t easy. We hope these suggestions help you narrow down the options.

Here are our ideas for a weekend in Spring without having to get in a car other than arriving and leaving. You’ll find details of all our suggested walks in the Long Barn digital guide along with maps.

Friday

Pick up some provisions locally on your way to the Long Barn. We recomend meat for a Sunday roast from Waines in Kirkbymoorside. Hunters in Helmseley is great for deli treats and Beadlam Farm Shop is excellent for the whole shop.

Settle into the Long Barn and enjoy some lemon drizzle cake with a cup of tea.

Relax in the Long Barn courtyard or have a relaxing walk around the village.

Drop into the pub for a pint of Millie George. Look out for the bowls of chips and sausages that arrive around 6pm; the locals (including us) hoover them up quickly.

Head back to the barn. Eat in with a home cooked meal provided by one of our recomended caterers.

Saturday

Make the most of the spring sunshine by exploring the North York Moors National Park.

Strike out on a walk from the door, heading on bridle ways to Hutton le Hole for a coffee. Loop back to Lastingham for a sandwich at the Black Smiths Arms. Look out for the black hebreidean sheep on the way.

Before leaving Lastingham, take a peek at the crypt in the village church. Then back through the woods and over the fields to Appleton. Look out for hare and lapwings as you approach the village.

After a hot shower or soak in the bath, head down to the Moors Inn for a meal in the private dining room. Don’t miss out on the specials on the blackboard. With all that walking, you may even have room for a pudding.

Back to the Long Barn for drinks and games in front of the log burner or watch a movie. There’s plenty of choice on Sky and in the dvd collection.

Sunday

Wake up to bacon and sausage sandwiches for breakfast. After a leisurely breakfast, strike out on the woodland walk to see the wild daffodils in bloom. This walk takes just under an hour. For those wanting something longer, walk through the woods down to Sinnington. The Fox and Hounds is a great refreshment stop, and dogs are welcome in the bar area.

Then back for a delicious Sunday roast dinner in the barn. Organise everyone with a job and make light work of the preparation. Clearing up is easy with two dishwashers.

To walk off your sunday lunch, do the 2 mile village loop over the common. Depending on the weather and how late you set out, it’s a great spot to see the sun set over Sutton Bank.

Just like at Christmas, enjoy left over roast dinner sandwiches for your final evening in the barn. You may even have energy for a table tennis match in the West Barn.
