September is a lovely month to stay at the Long Barn; there is a sense of calm descending in the North York Moors after the peak holiday season. The days are still warm and full of sunshine, but the first signs of leaves starting to turn are showing. The hedgerows are burgeoning with autumn fruits, sloes, crab apples, blackberries and cobb nuts.
The late flowering Ling heather is still in bloom on the Moors. The crowds have thinned at the coast. It feels as everyone is taking a breath. We love this month, as we revisit favourite walks and take in the first sights and smells of autumn on its way. Usually returning home with a bounty of foraged sloe berries, ready to start this year’s batch of sloe gin.
A New Start
This month often feels like a second start. While January brings the promise of a new calendar year, September holds a different kind of energy. A return to routine as children head back to school and the vibrant colours of summer give way to the gentle, earthy tones of autumn. It’s a time of transition, and for many, a period that calls for a moment of quiet reflection before the final stretch of the year.
Every year, North York Moors coordinates a whole host of activities as part of Mindful Month. As autumn colours appear the National Park invites us all to slow down and reconnect. Throughout September, a program of events offers a sanctuary from the everyday hustle, helping us all find peace and a deeper connection to nature.

Discover Peace in the Moors and at the Coast
This year’s calendar is packed full of wonderful events and activities. From the tranquil sounds of beach yoga at Whitby to the immersive experience of a sound meditation surrounded by the Moors. Dive into creative workshops like weaving and pottery or find your flow with a gentle trail run followed by yoga. Highlights include the “Mindful on the Moor Art & Wellbeing Festival“ at Danby Lodge, and the “Minds & Miles” cycling event, proving that mindfulness can be both active and still.
Mindful Month is more than just a series of events; it’s a chance to breathe, reflect, and rediscover yourself within the stunning, peaceful scenery of the North York Moors. It’s an invitation to let nature be your guide to a more mindful, rejuvenated you.
