Part of our ethos of running our own self-catering business at the Long Barn, is supporting other local business. And there are some brilliant ones in the North York Moors that we encourage our guests to support.

The Flower Belt is a perfect example of one. It attracts both locals and visitors to pick wildflowers in the most spectacular setting.

Head to Helmsley, and just a few drive minutes out of this pretty market town you’ll find the Flower Belt. Perched on top of a hill with the most beautiful views, you’ll find their flower field. They have 32 varieties of wildflower to pick, and the meadow in full flower is quite spectacular.

Alongside this field is a large sunflower field if you fancy a pop of sunflower yellow in your bouquet. You pick up your jar, vase or bucket and get picking.

This year has seen the arrival of the Flower Belt bar, serving pizzas and drinks from 12pm to 9pm. Where we visited this weekend, they were doing a roaring trade. (they also sell hot drinks) They are dog friendly and the site is very accessible for less able visitors.

Every Wednesday, they are now hosting flower workshops for adults and children. Adults can learn how to pick and arrange the perfect bouquet. And children’s workshops show them how to pick and press flowers.

Later in the season, they also run a pick your own pumpkin patch. They are open from 10am until late. It’s worth checking their social media for their latest news before you visit.

It’s a lovely way to while away a few hours. From picking flowers, to relaxing looking at the views. It’s also great to people watch in. A really relaxing way to spend a summers afternoon.
