It’s official. The weather currently is rubbish. However, dodging a few showers is part and parcel of a British BBQ. And as the weather starts to improve, we guarantee we’ll all be making up for lost time.

The good news is that it really is easy to BBQ when self-catering at the Long Barn, and it’s a great option  for a large group. You’ll find a massive Weber BBQ with plenty of space to cook on. It’s just steps away from the dining room and kitchen, so in perfect position to serve food from. Either gather everyone around the large oak table in the courtyard or escape to the dining room inside.

You can obviously order from one of the big supermarkets for delivery but we’d also suggest considering using one of the great local shops in the area.

We have two great farm shops, both with their own butcher’s counter and both 8 miles from us.

Beadlam Grange Farm Shop have a great mix and match offer which includes kebabs and skewers, along with marinated chicken fillets. Their meat is local (the beef reared on their farm) and they hand prepare their produce.

Cedar Barn also offer great produce from their shop, and sell lots of BBQ produce during the summer months. Both shops also have a deli and sell local produce from their shop.

We’re also lucky to have Hodgson Fish delivering to the local area. They supply all the restaurants round here from the Star at Harome to our own pub. They began delivering to households as well as the restaurant trade during Covid and now have an excellent web site. You can also call their shop direct if there is something specific you’d like. Their fish is spanking fresh and delicious.

Taylors of Pickering are the best green grocer in the area in our opinion. They also sell wholesale, so their fruit and veg are really fresh given their turnover. The shop is just part of their operation; lots of stock is also behind the scenes. So if you can’t see it, ask as they usually will have a specific herb that may not be on the shop floor. They are really helpful, so you can ring up and order ahead/check what’s in.

After some deli treats? We have some great local delis to pick up delicious cheeses and more. Hunters of Helmsley is small but perfectly formed; don’t miss out on the treasure trove upstairs. We also recommend Malton Relish who run a catering side along with their delicious deli shop.

Moorside Store is a tardis like local shop in Kirkbymoorside with an amazing range including Rafi Spice boxes. They also stock Ryeburn of Helmsley Ice cream. Just down the road is Waind’s butchers which is a lovely family run business. Along with a great selection of local meat, they also make their own pies on the premises.

Fancy someone else doing the hard work? What about a Pizza Party from Simply Delicious? Or step it up a notch and book Dan Graham to do a sushi buffet for you?

So, lots of choices. We hope that we’ve tempted you away from solely a supermarket shop to try out some of this great local produce.
