Town End Farm

In 2012 we had a mid-life crisis (although one of Ian’s colleagues told us we had already passed that marker). We have always been customer focused in our careers and had dreamed about taking control of our lives and running our own business. So, we took the plunge and decided to sell our house and set up a self-catering business for large groups of friends and family to meet up in style and comfort. We have put our hearts and souls into the restoration of this characterful luxurious self catering barn and tried to think of every detail you need to make your stay truly memorable. There is space to spread out in & relax, space to come together in. 7 generous en suite double bedrooms mean no one has the short straw. The Long Barn is the perfect place to escape to with family and friends for a special celebration in the beautiful North York Moors National Park.

Last night we went on a history walk around Appleton thanks to villager Jim Hall.

It’s available for guests to book - all Jim asks is for a donation to the Village Hall (and maybe a pint behind the bar at the pub)

It’s great introduction to village history. From medieval to current day.

We learnt a few things…

1. The black lean to that holds the Long Barn long store used to be the workshop for the village carpenter (and undertaker)

2. A previous owner of Town End Farm used to hold wild horses in the farm yard prior to breaking them in and selling them on.

3. Originally the village had 3 ale houses and several shops. The village post office has moved at least 3 times.

4. The fancy porch in the house opposite the pub is thought to have been repurposed from Appleton Hall. We think the statue on the top is of John Wesley.

5. In 1946 after the end of world war 2, a spit fire and a bomber collided in mid air over the village. All the airmen were killed. There was a man who lived having given up his place to his friend. For many years afterward, he laid flowers on his friends grave on the anniversary.

5. The village Reading Room was bought for £75 by a villager and arrived as a flat pack. It was less of a generous gesture and more to move the village meeting place from his grounds so he could build on his own plot.

And did you know that Selina Scott’s parents used to live in Butterstones opposite the pub (with the fancy windows)

Can’t wait for the next history walk!
