What Rosedale Show Tells You About the North York Moors

by Ian Berry | Aug 25, 2026 | Local Area

Heavy horses, immaculate ponies, wet wipes for sheep and the people who make one of our favourite local shows what it is. “That Shire is knock-kneed. Look at how it’s turning its back legs.” We were sitting on a straw bale beside the main ring at Rosedale Show,...

The Long Barn at Town End Farm

In 2012 we had a mid-life crisis (although one of Ian’s colleagues told us we had already passed that marker). We have always been customer focused in our careers and had dreamed about taking control of our lives and running our own business. So, we took the plunge and decided to sell our house and set up a self-catering business for large groups of friends and family to meet up in style and comfort. We have put our hearts and souls into the restoration of this characterful luxurious self catering barn and tried to think of every detail you need to make your stay truly memorable. There is space to spread out in & relax, space to come together in. 7 generous en suite double bedrooms mean no one has the short straw. The Long Barn is the perfect place to escape to with family and friends for a special celebration in the beautiful North York Moors National Park.

Different walks, same group.

We sometimes bump into separate parts of the same group staying at the Long Barn as they head off in different directions around Appleton.

On one recent stay, several were keen walkers and set off on a 12-mile circular route through Lastingham, Hutton-le-Hole and Gillamoor. We suspect a pint may have been sampled along the way too. We met them later heading for the Moors Inn, determined to fit in one last quick drink before going back for a soak in the bath.

Others chose a gentler circular walk through the lanes and fields around Appleton, with sloe foraging on their minds. We pointed them towards a few of our favourite spots and shared our sloe gin recipe. We’ve made many litres of it over the years, including for the Long Barn welcome hamper.

Another part of the group stayed closer to home. They had been reading "A Baker’s Dozen", written by Appleton’s History Group and kept in the Long Barn, and decided to explore some of the places mentioned in it.

First stop was the Three Faces, or “Blood Suckers”, carved above the entrance of a house part way along the village street, followed by Christ Church, our “little gem of a moorland church”.

Inside the church you’ll also find striking red and black works depicting village life by Appleton artist Anne Thalheim, along with our village library tucked onto pews at the back and open to everyone.

There is rather more to Appleton than first meets the eye.

And one of the things we like about seeing groups stay here is that everyone can head off and do something completely different during the day, then come back together at the Long Barn afterwards.
