If you’re looking for where to stay in the North York Moors for a large group, the Long Barn at Town End Farm sleeps up to 14 guests across seven generous en suite bedrooms.
We designed it for groups who want to stay together in one place, with enough space to relax, celebrate and properly spend time together. When we were renovating the barn, we spent a lot of time talking to friends and family about what they loved, and what frustrated them, when staying away as a group. We also drew on our own experiences.
The Long Barn reflects all of those conversations and details, in the hope that it makes your stay feel easy from the moment you arrive.
Space for everyone

One of the first things people look for when booking a group stay is space. Not just enough beds, but room to enjoy being together.
The Long Barn sleeps 14 guests across seven generous en suite bedrooms, each similar in size and style, so there’s no short straw when choosing where to sleep. We’ve all experienced being the last to arrive and ending up with the “broom cupboard” room, which doesn’t start a stay in the best way. Our biomass boiler supplies constant hot water, so there’s no risk of an unintended cold shower after a day out walking.
Downstairs, the layout makes it easy to gather as a group while still having space to spread out. There’s a large vaulted dining room for long, relaxed meals, a comfortable living room with a log burner, and a well equipped kitchen where cooking becomes part of the stay. We often hear from guests that everything they need is there, which makes us very happy. Although we are constantly adding to it; the latest addition is a Nutribullet blender for a healthy smoothy in the morning.
Room to be together, and apart

With larger groups, people often wonder if it will feel crowded. In reality, it rarely does.
Guests tend to drift between spaces. Some around the dining table, others in the living room, a few outside in the courtyard garden, or heading off for a walk straight from the door.
There’s also the West Barn, a separate space that gives groups more flexibility. Whether it’s for a table tennis marathon, a movie night or a yoga practice it’s a very versatile space. And from this year, it’s also available for wedding cermonies.
A setting that makes the stay

The Long Barn sits in the village of Appleton le Moors, within the North York Moors National Park.
From the door, you can walk straight out into open countryside. There’s also the Moors Inn, our well loved village pub just a few minutes away on foot, which often becomes part of the stay. Many of our guests book a meal there, as they have a private dining room that seats 14. It’s dog friendly too. If you’re there on a Friday evening, keep an eye on the bar for snacks. You’ll often find us there as well, usually with a small beer after a busy changeover.
For days out, places like Helmsley, Sandsend and Whitby are all within easy reach.
Designed for shared moments
Most bookings at the Long Barn are for celebrations. Big birthdays, family gatherings, and long overdue weekends with friends.
What they tend to have in common is a desire to spend time together in a setting that feels relaxed, but still special.
That might be a long lunch around the table, a walk across the moors, or an evening that stretches on by the fire.
A place to bring everyone together

Finding somewhere that works for a large group isn’t always straightforward. If you’re the one doing the booking, it can feel like a thankless task.
We’ve been there ourselves, which is why we wrote our “Five Tips when booking a self catering cottage”, based on both our own experience and guest feedback.
You need enough space, the right layout, and a location that gives people options without making things complicated.
The Long Barn brings those things together in one place, making it easier to plan something everyone can look forward to.
If you’re planning a group stay in the North York Moors, we think it’s well worth a look.
