If you’re staying at the Long Barn, a trip to Sandsend is one of those days that tends to become a favourite.

It’s an easy drive across the moors, and within a short time you’re by the sea, with wide open space, fresh air, and a completely different pace to the day.

Whether you’re visiting as a family or a group of friends, it works well because there’s something for everyone, without needing a plan.

Although if you’re going as a large group, we’d recommend booking ahead for lunch.

A Beach That Gives You Space

Sandsend has a feel that’s hard to beat. At low tide, the beach stretches out, giving plenty of room for walking, paddling, or simply sitting and taking it all in. It works particularly well for groups as you never feel crowded.

If you time it right with the tides, you can walk all the way along the beach to Whitby, which makes for a really memorable day.

One of our favourite things to do is walk along the shoreline and look for pebbles shaped by the sea. Ian’s mum always said that finding a pebble with a hole in it brings good luck, so we still keep an eye out.

It’s a simple thing, but often the moments like this are the ones people remember most.

Sandsend is also very dog friendly, which many of our guests value. Do just be aware that there are seasonal restrictions on parts of the beach during the summer months.

Lunch by the Sea

Food is an important part of any day out, and Sandsend does it well.

We often head to The Fish Cottage for lunch. It’s a relaxed spot right by the coast, and always feels like part of the day rather than a stop in the middle of it. For something simple, a crab sandwich from Sandside Café is hard to beat. Fresh, straightforward, and exactly what you want by the sea.

We’ve also heard very good things about Mary’s Sandwich Shop, which is on our list for a future visit. And if you’re picking something up for later, it’s worth stopping by East Row Deli for excellent sourdough bread and a selection of local cheeses.

A Browse Between Walks

After some time on the beach, it’s worth having a wander through the small selection of shops.

Berties of Bay is a favourite for heritage clothing, with pieces that feel made to last.

Wild Hart offers a mix of gifts and interesting finds. It’s the sort of place where you often come away with something you didn’t plan to buy.

Easy Days, No Rush

One of the reasons Sandsend works so well from the Long Barn is that it doesn’t need structuring.

Parking is usually straightforward, but if you can’t find a space along the front, there’s a large car park just beyond The Fish Cottage which is a reliable option.

You can arrive late morning, spend time on the beach, have lunch, wander a little, and head back when it suits you. Or stay longer and take in the changing light as the day moves on.

It suits mixed groups, different ages, and different ideas of what a good day looks like.

Back to the Barn

After a day by the sea, coming back to the Long Barn feels easy.

Shoes off, something cooking, and everyone back together again. Often those shared evenings end up being just as memorable as the day out itself.
